I couldn’t move... what could possibly go Ron?

DWTS Aengus tells of samba struggle in Anchorman suit

AENGUS Mac Grianna has revealed he could hardly move in his Anchorman outfit on Dancing With The Stars last weekend.

The former RTE newsreader channelled his inner Ron Burgundy for his samba routine in a nod to his infamous TV blooper of 2013.

A clip of him topping up his make-up live on air went viral almost a decade ago, but thankfully Aengus now sees the funny side.

He told the Irish Sunday Mirror: “It wasn’t the most comfortable costume, you’re literally sewn into the clothes.

“It can be quite constricting, but you have to push beyond that and find a new resistance level.

“I don’t have any decision over what I am dancing or what song is chosen for me, but it’s important to be able to laugh at yourself.

“The whole idea was to do a Ron Burgundy interpretation of the samba. I think it went down well – not with the judges, but with the audience.” Aengus, 57, admitted he’s nervous about lifting pro dance partner Emily Barker in case he might drop her.

He said: “I don’t have a great amount of upper body strength for doing that – and I’m not 25.

“I will do whatever I am physically capable of doing, but not these big fancy lifts and twirls over the head.

“I want to achieve the highest level of physicality I can, but I want to be realistic.”

Aengus, who lives on an alpaca farm in Co Meath with his husband Terry Gill, will dance a jive on tonight’s live show, but is fairly clueless when it comes to the steps.

He said: “The Charleston was good fun and the jive will be fast moving, so I’m looking forward to that.

“When I started this competition the only two dances I had any idea about were the waltz and the Charleston.

“Now I know the names of a few others, but no idea of the moves.”

Aengus came in for some sharp comments from judge Brian Redmond last week but insists he will continue to take it on the chin.

He said: “The criticism is tough but maybe I’m that bit longer in the tooth, I don’t take it to heart.

“When I’m really having a tough time and things are not going great I think of the people who voted for me or sent me lovely messages of support.”
