Robins flying until Keane comes to rescue for Latics

WIGAN .................... 1 Keane 67 BRISTOL CITY ........... 1 Weimann 6 By JOHN RICHARDSON

BRISTOL CITY striker Chris Martin rescued a pigeon, while Will Keane was the saviour for Wigan with a scrambled equaliser.

Martin had held up the start of the second half after seeing the bird still on the pitch enjoying some much needed water from the sprinkler system, carefully transporting it to the dug-out.

The Robins were leading 1-0 thanks to a sixth-minute strike from experienced forward Andi Weimann, the Austrian on a hot streak with four goals from four games.

And they felt that Wigan should have been down to 10 men when Latics full-back Joe Bennett was fortunate to receive a yellow and not a red in the 16th minute for kicking out at Joe Williams after the pair had tangled.

That perplexed Bristol City boss Nigel Pearson whose team had started with gusto belying a side which had lost its first two league games.

“Evidently it was petulance rather than aggression,” he said.

“I can’t justify the official’s decision.”

Wigan, with Max Power forceful in midfield, never threw in the towel and when a James Mcclean corner wasn’t cleared, Keane pounced in the 67th minute from close range after a goalmouth scrap.

Boss Leam Richardson said: “We are unbeaten, it’s a strong league and we’re still trying to strengthen.

“I felt we looked a threat all game.”
