I’m still mad for Madonna

Superstar hits out at Queen of Pop’s critics

-

Pink has shown her support for Madonna after she called out the “ageist and misogynistic” critics who slammed her appearance at the Grammys.

We invited the superstar – the UK’S most played female artist of the 21st century – to help us launch our brand new No Filter showbiz column.

And we couldn’t have asked for a more fitting guest editor than Pink – who is famous for her candid opinions and cackles as she admits she has been cancelled “so many times”.

So it’s no surprise that when it comes to the very public takedown of pop icon Madonna, Pink doesn’t hold back.

“It’s unfair, it’s always unfair – and it’s ageism,” she blasts. “The attitude is no longer, ‘That person has been amazing for so long’, it’s all about bashing them.

“I hate it. Let’s give people the respect they’ve earned and be a bit nicer. Can we all be a bit nicer? I want to be nicer – to myself and others.

“When a person walks out, the first thing I think isn’t, ‘Holy s**t, did you see their face?’ I don’t think like that. “I think, ‘Holy s**t, that person’s been amazing for so long. It’s the same [with the bashing] of Rihanna at the Super Bowl.

“Rihanna’s one of the coolest people walking the Earth. She’s effortlessly cool.”

Pink – who this week released her ninth studio album, Trustfall – has always championed her fellow female artists.

So the controversy surrounding the gender-neutral Brit Awards’ Best Artist category being allmale presents a dilemma.

She admits candidly: “I’m kind of in the middle. I love it and hate it.

“I love it because of progress – I understand the intention and it’s a good one – but now it’s going to be harder for girls to get on the bill with the boys.

“I feel strongly about both things. I feel strongly about inclusivity and the conversation happening about gender, but I’m also a feminist.

“I also think awards are kind of dumb. There are so many great boundary-pushing artists at the moment… I want to give everyone a trophy.” We’re right behind her on that.
