Cannon has a ball after blasting rivals

-

PRESTON turned half-time jeers into full-time cheers as they notched a first home win since November at Wigan’s expense.

North End were booed at the interval as they trailed against their rivals.

However, goals from Daniel Johnson and Tom Cannon sent the fans home happy.

Asked about the reaction, Lowe said: “It’s disappointing of course, but I understand it.

“It’s not nice, but emotions were running high and the lads have gone on to show great character to get the win.

“They could have sank at half-time, but they gave me everything in the second half and that’s all I care about.”

Preston were on top in the early stages, with Ryan Ledson and Cannon both going close.

However, the Latics’ near 4,000-strong travelling army went wild as their team struck on 27 minutes.

Preston defender Greg Cunningham could only force Christ Tiehi’s angled shot over the line after the French midfielder had played a smart one-two with Ashley Fletcher.

North End levelled from the spot when Johnson hopped off the deck and coolly slotted home after he had been tripped by Ben Amos on 53 minutes.

Within minutes the tables were turned right around when Everton loanee Cannon fired home low after meeting skipper Alan Browne’s pass.

It was a first defeat in five games for Latics boss Shaun Maloney.

He said: “We probably didn’t perform well enough to win it. It’s the first big blow and now it’s vital how we’re going to respond.” PRESTON: Woodman 7; Diaby 7, Cunningham 6 (Bauer (90) 5), Lindsay 8; Potts 7, Johnson 7 (Brady (79) 5), Ledson 8, Fernandez 5; Browne 8; Parrott 6 (Storey (90) 5), Cannon 7 WIGAN: Amos 6; Hughes 6 (Aasgaard (79) 6), Whatmough 7, Nyambe 6; Darikwa 5 (Pearce (63) 6), Power 7, Tiehi 8, Mcclean 7 (Caulker (90) 5); Lang 6, Keane 5 (Sinani (63) 7), Fletcher 5 STAR MAN: Alan Browne – The skipper put in another terrific shift in the North End engine room.
