Rosenior rage as spot-on Wells lifts Robins’ hopes

- By RICHARD LATHAM

LIAM ROSENIOR fumed over the handball decision that cost his Hull City side a battling point.

Referee Sam Barrott pointed to the spot on 70 minutes, judging that Cyrus Christie had blocked Anis Mehmeti’s cross with an arm, inches inside the box.

Substitute Nahki Wells sent Hull’s debutant goalkeeper Karl Darlow the wrong way with a powerful penalty that helped extend the Robins’ unbeaten run to 12 games. It looked a harsh decision and Tigers boss Rosenior said: “It was not a penalty. There is no way Cyrus could have got out of the way because the ball was driven at him.

“You just want common sense in that situation. But it was not the reason we lost. Our team performance was well below par.

“We reacted well to falling behind, but I want that sort of performance from the start.”

Sub Benjamin Tetteh headed against a post for Hull in the closing stages.

It was an incisive Robins display that suggested they could cause Manchester City problems in Tuesday night’s FA Cup fifth-round tie at Ashton Gate. Boss

Nigel Pearson said: “We worked hard against a side who defended their box with a lot of commitment.

“I can’t have too much sympathy with Hull over the penalty because at their place on the opening day of the season they were given a dubious one and we were denied two stonewallers.” BRISTOL CITY: O’leary 7; Tanner 7 (Cornick (71) 6), Vyner 7, Kalas 7, Pring 7; James 8, Williams 7; Sykes 7, Scott 7 (Weimann (80) 6), Mehmeti 7 (Dasilva (80) 6); Bell 6 (Wells (63) 7) HULL: Darlow 7; Christie 6, Jones 7, Mcloughlin 7, Greaves 6; Docherty 6 (Traore (78) 6), Simons 6; Tufan 6 (Longman (46) 6), Slater 6 (Coyle (65) 6); Ebiowei 6 (Tetteh (55) 6); Estupinan 6 STAR MAN: Matty James – He was assured throughout and the midfield driving force behind many of Bristol City’s best moves.
