Early rising gives you a chance to seize day

- SIOBHANO’CONNOR

JENNIFER Aniston, Oprah Winfrey and Mark Wahlberg all say their rock solid morning routine is the key to their success.

Whether you’re a mammy or a Hollywood star, getting up before anyone else rises is the only way to take your power back.

I met former Friends star Jennifer in 2011 in LA with Adam Sandler.

The pair were promoting blockbuster Just Go With It.

I thought Adam, 56, was having a laugh when he said: “Jen has been up since 4.30am to get her workout in.”

Back then I was party mad and would still have been dancing the night away at that hour.

The thought of that ungodly hour seemed bonkers to me.

Fast forward a decade and I can’t wait to get out of bed at 5.25am before the kids wake up.

As for Jen, 54, she kickstarts her day at 4.30am by washing her face, drinking hot lemon water, meditating for 20 minutes followed by her workout.

The most she will drink on a night out is one glass of red wine. Now that’s discipline. Ted star Mark Wahlberg, 51, is on another level.

He wakes at 2.30am, prays and then hits the gym.

Chat show queen Oprah, 69, gets up a little later at 7.10am.

She meditates for 20 minutes, takes her dogs out then does her workout.

There’s a common thread, these celebs get up every morning and put themselves first before checking their phones or tending to the needs of others.

There is sciencebacked evidence as to why a morning routine works.

If you set an intention during your morning meditation or journaling practice you are more likely to be successful throughout your day.

You are programming yourself to stick to your intention and you won’t get as uptight if the “you know what” hits the fan. If you open your phone and start scrolling, you’re letting outside influences disrupt your flow.

If you hit snooze on the alarm button, you end up in a state of sleep inertia, playing havoc with your circadian rhythm.

But I messed it all up myself this week.

On Thursday, I had the day from hell because I didn’t get up before my kids.

I failed to get my workout in, didn’t do any meditation and the day ran away from me.

My girls fed off my discombobulated energy. Fighting and screaming the place down ensued.

I felt robbed of time and wanted to jump out the window.

On this day I was letting life happen TO me and not FOR me.

Nothing can hit you like a tsunami if you put yourself first.
