Over ‘volatile’ trans inmate

- BY EMMA MCMENAMY

A TRANSGENDER woman who threatened to torture, rape and kill her mother is deemed so dangerous by prison staff she’s being held in isolation.

Barbie Kardashian, 21, was this week jailed for five and a half years with the final 12 months suspended and is under 23-hour lock up at Limerick Prison.

She is considered so volatile that it takes several prison officers to escort her from her cell for the one hour of exercise she gets each day.

At her sentence hearing, gardai told Limerick Circuit Court they continue to have “grave concerns” about Kardashian’s “motivation to carry out the threats”.

Detective Garda Niall Fitzgerald said he believes Kardashian poses “a significant threat to those she has made threats towards, as well as to the wider public”.

A source revealed: “She’s one of the most dangerous inmates in the system.

“She’s only unlocked by several staff as she poses that much of a threat, no chances are being taken.”

Kardashian was convicted by a jury on May 9, 2022 of seven counts of threatening to kill, and her sentence was backdated to that date.

The insider added: “Kardashian was convinced she wasn’t getting a sentence and would be out this week so she hasn’t taken the news too well. There is serious concern that she will kick off in coming days.

“There is only one other transgender inmate in the female jail but they don’t mix.

“Kardashian is far too dangerous to allow out to interact with anyone else.”

During the trial, the court heard the defendant was born a male, Gabrielle Alejandro Gentile, and later changed her name by deed poll to Barbie Kardashian.

She was granted a gender recognition certificate by the Department of Social Protection in 2020 in recognition of her identifying as a female.

The court also heard Kardashian is currently on a waiting list to be assessed for “appropriate medical treatment” in relation to her gender.

She was placed in care from the age of nine, and later told gardai and social care workers that she had been sexually and physically assaulted when she was a child.

Judge O’donnell ordered Kardashian must adhere to strict obligations for two years after her release and if she did not follow these he may enact the suspended part of her sentence.
