Hotel of the week

- BY HOWARD LLOYD

Merchants Manor, Falmouth

WHERE AND WHY

The superb Merchants Manor is located in the thriving coastal town of Falmouth on the south Cornwall coast. It’s within easy reach of the centre of town and Falmouth’s two main beaches, Swanpool and Gyllyngvase (Gylly).

The property was built in 1913 by George Newby Carne, descendant of a long line of shipping merchants, wine distillers and beer brewers. It is bursting with character and boasts beautiful lounges, including an elegant drawing room with vintage furniture and doors opening on to tropical gardens.

Wellness is popular here and there is a lovely indoor pool, gym and steam room.

The hotel has 38 stylish and comfortable rooms. All feature lovely throws and coloured soft furnishings inspired by its location – some with white walls and varying blue tones reflecting the maritime influence.

Jewels in the crown are the two luxurious selfcatering eco-apartments named Lookout and Landlubber. Lookout offers beautiful views of the sea, while Landlubber is encircled by beautiful plants to give it a wonderful tranquil, natural feel. They are both secluded and elegantly decorated with furnishings in rich tones.

Their stunning balconies even have a Jacuzzi – perfect to enjoy as evening rolls in.

ON THE MENU

Merchants Manor’s restaurant, Rastella, has three AA rosettes – and they are well deserved. Most of the food is locally sourced and is nothing short of sensational. Innovative dishes include mackerel, six-year sourdough and char siu pork belly on the tasting menu. The sevencourse tasting menu is set at a very reasonable £59, while there is also a la carte, day-time dining and Sunday dinner menus.

Breakfast is superb and afternoon teas, cake and aperitifs are also available during the day.

WHILE YOU’RE THERE

As well as a gym, swimming pool and treatment rooms, the hotel also boasts a barrel sauna, steam room and various classes in the ballroom including yoga.

If you do venture further afield, Falmouth is a vibrant university town that is packed with bars and restaurants.

Don’t miss Pendennis Castle and its weapons collection, and the National Maritime Museum Cornwall with its flotilla of sailing boats and historical artefacts. And there’s also Falmouth Art Gallery.
