Ain’t no quick fix admits Gareth as Sky Blues run riot

GARETH AINSWORTH thinks QPR must toughen up to stay in the Championship.

A three-goal defeat by Coventry puts the West Londoners a point off the drop. With just one win in 20 games, fan frustration was clear.

But boss Ainsworth knows he must find some way of getting points.

He said “We’re too fragile, we start looking around, we go into individual mode and we’re not a team then.

“I came in with open eyes, I’ve always said that. There’s a hell of a lot to change here but I can’t do it in this period of time.

“I’ve got to try and manufacture teams that get results. Monday at The Hawthorns seemed a real turning point.”

Coventry put the Hoops to the sword after 10 minutes, when Gustavo Hamer broke and squared for Viktor Gyokeres to finish.

QPR struggled to find an equaliser, in front of an increasingly frustrated home crowd, although Ilias Chair forced Ben Wilson into a save from a free-kick, right on half-time.

Wilson was called into action again five minutes after the restart, when he palmed away a Sam Field piledriver.

Any thoughts of a QPR comeback were dashed five minutes before the end when the impressive Hamer shot past Seny Dieng on the second attempt, after the keeper saved.

Two minutes later, Gyokeres slotted home off the post to send almost 3,000 fans in the away end absolutely wild.

Coventry looked comfortable, and a late push for the play-offs looks on the cards, and manager Mark Robins reflected on a job well done. He said “I thought we started off well, and bright. We took control of it pretty quickly, which was good to see.

“QPR have quality but they ended up in a situation where they lack confidence from time to time.

“As that second half went on, we looked like we could open them up a bit more.

“The energy we needed to bring was there.’ QPR: Dieng 5; Dunne 5 (Laird (72) 4), Dickie 6, Paal 6; Adomah 5 (Willock (72) 4), Field 6, Dozzell 5 (Johansen (80) 4), Chair 6, (Richards (65) 4); Martin 5 (Lowe (72) 4), Dykes 6.
