‘Fat’ Freddie in rage after mum’s death

- BY EMMA MCMENAMY

JAILED gangster “Fat” Freedie Thompson went into a rage smashing up his cell after learning of his mother’s death last weekend, but was allowed to pay his final respects to her at a funeral home.

Thompson, who is serving life in prison for the Kinahan cartel murder of shop-keeper David “Daithi” Douglas in 2016, smashed his TV, toaster, microwave as well and caused hundreds of euro worth of damage at Portlaoise Prison. On Friday, the 43-year-old is understood to have been taken under armed prison escort to pay his respects to his late mother Lisa, who died last Sunday. The convicted killer is said to be “heartbroken” over his mother’s death.

A prison source told the Irish Sunday Mirror how it would have been too much of a safety issue for Thompson to attend his mother’s funeral in Dublin city centre tomorrow.

The source said: “Thompson applied for temporary release from prison to attend the funeral on Monday.

“In some cases inmates are granted permission and would be able to attend the service with prison staff accompanying them.

“It was deemed too dangerous so he was allowed to pay his final respects to her at the funeral home on Friday instead.”

It’s believed Lisa, who was in her 70s, had been in ill health for some time.

Lisa Thompson, nee Roe, is also the sister of Sadie Byrne whose son David, an associate of the Kinahan cartel, was shot dead at the Regency Hotel in February 2016.

The funeral mass will take place at 11am in St Nicholas of Myra Church on Francis Street in Dublin.

The service will be followed by a burial in Mount Jerome Cemetery, South Dublin.
