Canopy by Hilton London City

- BY RYAN PATON

WHERE AND WHY

East London hip meets City of London style for an ultra modern experience at Canopy by Hilton London City.

This trendy hotel is near Aldgate station, right in the heart of one of the capital’s most vibrant districts. The location has inspired the hotel’s personality and murals of colourful Shoreditch street art adorn the corridors on the way to our classy King Junior suite.

The spacious ninth floor room was decked out with contemporary furniture with a sofa and boasted fine views of the City skyscrapers.

Refreshments are provided by the East London Tea company and we struggled to leave the room as we sipped a premium local brew while looking out at landmarks such as the Gherkin and St Paul’s Cathedral.

ON THE MENU

We put on our gladrags to enjoy a sophisticated evening in the Florattica rooftop bar. The 11th floor cocktail bar is an Instagrammer’s dream as it features a beautiful floral ceiling and an unbeatable vantage point for those views.

The floral theme is inspired by East London’s rich textile industry and extends to the cocktail menu, which has been crafted by renowned mixologist Serena Carrino. I started the experience with an Inca cocktail (£18) and my guest opted for the Avalon (£16).

These wonderfully presented gin-based cocktails were zesty and refreshing.

The dining menu consisted of a range of small plates designed to share. We started with a charcuterie board (£24 for two), which featured a selection of cured meats and olives. The meats were of the finest quality and the tender bresaola was a particular highlight.

Our friendly server recommended the lobster roll (£18) and this proved to be stellar advice as the creme fraiche, chives and lemon oil combined to create a true taste sensation.

We also opted for the goat’s cheese mousse (£14), which came with caramelised pecans and baby beetroot.

WHILE YOU’RE THERE

The hotel is within walking distance of Tower Bridge and the Tower of London and trendy Shoreditch and Spitalfields. We took advantage of the convenient access to Aldgate and Liverpool Street stations to head to the West End to catch a theatre show.
