SKIPP: I’M A SPURS FAN TOO... BUT DAV MUST NOT BE SINGLED OUT FOR FLAK
OLIVER SKIPP knows just how unhappy Tottenham supporters are feeling right now – after all, he’s a massive Spurs fan himself and very much ‘one of their own’. But while he understands the old frustrations that have resurfaced in recent weeks, Skipp (left) would rather the whole group of players bore the blame, not just certain individuals. Captain Hugo Lloris spoke out last weekend after hearing defender Davinson Sanchez (right) targeted even BEFORE he came on as a substitute – and again when he was hooked later in the 3-2 home defeat by Bournemouth. Skipp said: “The fans are completely entitled to their own opinions. I would say booing an individual before they come on the pitch is hard to see but, totally, the fans have the right to boo the whole collective team, 100 percent.
“It’s hard to witness when it is a team-mate. To come on into an environment like that is hard – in tough times we really need the fans to support us and get behind us.
“Obviously, it was disappointing, but Davinson is a great guy and he will be making sure he’s working hard to focus on what he can do. I’m sure he will come out of it in a positive mood.”
Skipp, 22, needs only to make five more appearances this season to have had his greatest involvement in a Spurs campaign. He said: “Established is maybe not the right word but I definitely feel more comfortable on the pitch.” His loan season at Norwich – helping them win the Championship in 2020-21 – gave Skipp an excellent grounding, so too did working with Spurs bosses Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte. The midfielder added: “With Pochettino it was little details in terms of body position, not necessarily tactical, more the principles. Jose and Conte were more tactical, especially Conte for detail in the classroom. “I have taken little bits from each of them. All three were amazing in terms of pushing me.”
