GORD HOPING FOR ENGLAND TOON-UP

- BY JOHN RICHARDSON

FOR Newcastle United’s £45million man Anthony Gordon, it has been a season of highs and lows.

In November, complete with specially purchased designer sunglasses, he joined a group of Everton players who climbed the iconic Sydney Harbour bridge during a tour.

In January, in his £100,000 Mercedes G-wagon, it was back down to earth as he was chased down a street outside Goodison

Park by angry Toffees fans, calling him a “f ***** g s***house”.

Later that month, he was on the up again, moving to Tyneside all geared up ready to play a major role in Newcastle’s bid for a Champions League place.

But the Premier League starts have been infrequent, leading to question marks over the size of his transfer fee, and making it a bit of a downer for the 22-year-old, despite most of the Toon army still having faith and serenading the winger with his own song. Gordon said: “People haven’t seen what I’m really capable of yet, but I’m convinced that will change, and next season I will really be on it.”

In his favour is the fact that he has made an impact at St James’ Park with his attitude and commitment, despite not having things his own way.

Now, Gordon is hoping for a lift, which normally comes when he puts on an England shirt. After a short break, he will link up with the

England Under-21 squad for a training camp prior to the European Championship finals later this month in Romania and Georgia.

He said: “I seem to have saved some of my best games playing for the U21s – it gives you a buzz that you are recognised as one of the best in your country for your age.

“The England shirt means so much to me and one day I would really love to be involved with the senior side.”
