Mescal mystery tour
Actor tipped to play Fab Four’s Paul in biopic movies on The Beatles
PAUL Mescal is to star in the upcoming Beatles biopic with the actor tipped to play Paul Mccartney.
The actor, 27, who rose to international fame after starring in 2020 drama Normal People, is shortlisted to play one of the Fab Four.
Kildare native Mescal is being eyed by director Sam Mendes for the eagerlyawaited feature, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Oscar winner Mendes plans four biopics telling the story of the Liverpudlian legends, made up of Mccartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.
It was announced in February he will direct four features in all, each from the perspective of a different band member. The biopics will be told from each band member’s point-of-view and will intersect to “tell the story of the greatest band in history”.
Mescal first wowed audiences as a teen in school musicals where he won praise for his singing voice.
He is set to star in a new movie, Merrily We Roll Along, which is based on the 1981 Stephen Sondheim musical of the same name.
The film’s director Richard Linklater described Mescal as “a transcendent talent” who “can really sing”. He added: “I’m just so happy we
connected before he went supernova.”
Mescal’s career has gone stratospheric since he won praise for his role as Connell on Normal People, based on Sally Rooney’s book.
He was this weekend reunited with his co-star Daisy Edgar Jones at the Fastnet Film Festival in
Cork. Now a Hollywood A-lister, he made his film debut in The Lost Daughter, starring alongside Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson and Jessie Buckley. He went on to star in God’s Creatures and Carmen and gained his first Oscar nomination for Aftersun. More recently he won critical acclaim starring opposite Andrew Scott in All of Us Strangers. Mescal will lead the cast of Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2 which also stars big names such as Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington.
