Champs make solid start
COUNTY champions Naomh Moninne opened their 2018 senior hurling league campaign in impressive fashion when they got the better of St Fechins at DKIT on Wednesday night.
Young Darren Geoghegan, playing his first season at adult level, was quick to make an impression firing over the opening point for the Dundalk side and they went on to open a 0-10 to 0-3 lead on the quarter hour.
A goalmouth scramble saw John Crosbie fire past Moninne keeper Donal Connolly, but Stephen Ryan responded with a goal almost immediately at the other end.
A third goal of the half scored by the Fechin’s most effective forward Niall Devlin made it 1-14 to 2-5.
After the sides had shared the opening two points Darren Geoghegan netted from a tight angle to give his side a nine point lead early into the second half.
Fechin’s did rally, but Brian Brady’s side sealed a deserved victory when Ronan Geoghegan was credited with his sides third goal as his 65 metre free was misjudged by county keeper Stephen Hackett and ended up in the net.
