Champs make solid start

COUNTY cham­pi­ons Naomh Moninne opened their 2018 se­nior hurl­ing league cam­paign in im­pres­sive fash­ion when they got the bet­ter of St Fechins at DKIT on Wed­nes­day night.

Young Dar­ren Geoghe­gan, play­ing his first sea­son at adult level, was quick to make an im­pres­sion fir­ing over the open­ing point for the Dun­dalk side and they went on to open a 0-10 to 0-3 lead on the quar­ter hour.

A goal­mouth scram­ble saw John Cros­bie fire past Moninne keeper Donal Con­nolly, but Stephen Ryan re­sponded with a goal al­most im­me­di­ately at the other end.

A third goal of the half scored by the Fechin’s most ef­fec­tive for­ward Niall Devlin made it 1-14 to 2-5.

Af­ter the sides had shared the open­ing two points Dar­ren Geoghe­gan net­ted from a tight an­gle to give his side a nine point lead early into the sec­ond half.

Fechin’s did rally, but Brian Brady’s side sealed a de­served vic­tory when Ro­nan Geoghe­gan was cred­ited with his sides third goal as his 65 me­tre free was mis­judged by county keeper Stephen Hack­ett and ended up in the net.
