NEW CYCLE ROUTE TO LINK WEXFORD AND EUROPE
A NEW cycling route linking County Wexford with Europe was launched recently at Saltmills.
Outgoing Wexford County Council chairman Cllr Paddy Kavanagh launched the EuroVelo1 route, part of the prestigious international network of long distance cycling routes connecting Europe.
EuroVelo is a chain of 15 long-distance cycle routes promoting the discovery of Europe on bicycle. EuroVelo 1, known as the Atlantic Coast Route, is one of these routes. It spans the length of the continent, from Norway, to the Algarve, via England, Ireland, Wales, France and Spain.
Following significant investment by Wexford County Council, EuroVelo1 is now fully developed and signposted throughout Wexford. The Wexford section of the Eurovelo1 has also recently published in the European Cycling Federation Eurovelo1 Map as a designated and designed route, complete with signage, putting Wexford cycling trails firmly on the map for locals and internationals alike.
Starting at Rosslare Harbour ferry, the Wexford EuroVelo1 route takes cyclists to discover Wexford’s quiet and scenic country roads and villages, before breaking at Ballyhack ferry, where enthusiasts can choose to continue their pedal on to Waterford.
The route predominantly hugs the coastal roads and comprises a total of 120km of maintained, signed cycle route. A large crowd attended the launch of EuroVelo 1 in The Vine Cottage, in Saltmills, where a series of activities throughout the day kept people of all ages entertained.
Hook Ringers Cycling Club, accompanied by Wexford County Council’s Cycling Officer Frank Burke, lead an 8km family cycle through stunning scenery on a section of the EuroVelo1, departing from and returning to The Vine Cottage. Upon pulling the brakes, participants enjoyed the various festivities on offer, including light refreshments, music and a children’s play area.
Addressing those gathered, Cllr Kavanagh said: ‘ The EuroVelo1 is a significant opportunity to put Wexford on the map for international tourism. But it is also an excellent activity for locals looking for an alternative day out, and we look forward to seeing more and more of our own residents participate in these recreational activities that Wexford has become renowned for.’
