NEW ROSS

Glorious weather and big entries in competitions - that was the story from the course in the last couple of weeks. The recent highlight was the staging of the Military Cup sponsored by Eddie Sweeney of Sweeney’s Garden Centre, Marshmeadows, New Ross. This trophy was presented to the club by the Irish Military Battalion who were stationed at Bawnjames in the 1940s.

All players like to have their name inscribed on this iconic trophy and this year, after a three-way tie, Des Redmond (20) was that man with a nett score of 68. On the same score and only beaten after a countback over the last nine holes was Mullinavat’s Owen Conway (10), whilst Liam Connolly (8) also finished with a 68.

The gross went to Donal Hosey with 75, Category 1 went to Junior Cashin (5) with nett 70, John Moran (14) took Category 2 with 69, and James O’Brien (17) won Category 3, also with 69.

In the Tuesday evening fourball (14 holes) competition sponsored by the club, the latest winners were Tommy Liston (7) and Tommy Tyler (15) after a countback with 35 points.

In second place were the Mullinavat duo of Ned Conway (15) and Paddy Fitzpatrick (24), also with 35 points. Michael Coady (15) from Borris and Aidan Somers (18), also from Borris, were placed third with the same score. Next Tuesday evening’s competition is sponsored by Pat Kehoe Oils.

The big club classic takes place from August 10 to 13 and booking is now available online. All members are urged to lend their support to this fundraiser and invite friends and colleagues from other clubs to take part.

There is a fantastic array of prizes to be won with all sectors catered for - men’s, ladies, mixed, Seniors, so why not organise your pairing and make the classic a success?

The novel Split The Pot fundraiser is going well, with a nice few euro to be won each week, and the bigger the pot the bigger the pay-out. For €2 entry fee you have the chance of taking home some extra cash as well as helping the club’s coffers.

Put your €2 in an envelope, pop it in the box, and you never know your luck.

NEW ROSS SENIORS

We were on tour last week when we went on our annual visit to Dungarvan where we received a gracious welcome from the secretary/manager, Irene Lynch. On a course in pristine condition and with Bahamas-like sunshine beaming down over Dungarvan Bay, our large travelling contingent enjoyed a wonderful day’s golf.

Strange courses hold no fears for our veterans as witnessed by the high scores returned, showing that they can hold their own anywhere with players of a younger vintage.

Topping the scoring returns with a terrific 90 points were Jimmy ‘Ross’ Ryan (18), Mikey Lee (18), Willie Naddy (20) and Jamesie Murphy (24), the quartet collecting the vintage vino (wines) in the process.

Second place was secured by Tony Harford (14), Jimmy O’Neill (19), Liam Glasheen (20) and Jim Kehoe (24) with 87 points. John Kennedy (16), Willie Kelly (18), John Joe Murray (21) and Martin Burke (25) had a final tally of 86 points to finish third.

On the same score (86 points) and in fourth spot came Andy Ronan (14), Steve Travis (18), Larry Shannon (20) and Tony Sexton (22). Fifth prize went to Eamon Delaney (16), John Murphy (18), Tom Kent (25) and Les Jastrebski (26), and the sixth was won by Tommy Ryan (15), John Joe Cullen (18), Paddy Bennett (19) and Donie Cody (23).

On behalf of our group, Tony Harford in a few well-chosen words thanked Dungarvan Golf Club for their friendly welcome and their hospitality both on the course and in the restaurant where we enjoyed excellent food after golf.

We were back on home soil last Thursday where we avoided the thundery downpours until after we had finished our round of golf (talk about the early bird catching the worm) - we certainly benefited from the 9.45 a.m. start. On a course playing well after the recent rain, we enjoyed the camaraderie and the craic associated with the Seniors group.

The scoring was good too as evidenced by the winning tally of 91 points put together by Denis Kirwan (12), Luke Power (18), Mick Long (20) and Tom Kent (26). Second a point behind on 90 were the quartet of Steve Travis (17), Hughie O’Connor (18), Michael Lee (18) and Martin Hartley (22), whilst the three-person team of John Hosey (14), Willie Naddy (19) and Paddy Bennett (19) finished third with 88 points, (82+6). Nearest the pin prizes were won by Mick Long on the ninth hole and Willie Kelly on the eleventh.

All members are asked to support the club fundraiser, ‘Split The Po’, for an entry fee of a mere €2 with a chance of winning a decent prize which is drawn for every Sunday at lunchtime.

Also a reminder of the club classic starting August 10 which is a two-person champagne scramble at an entry fee of €20 per person with re-entry only €10 each.

Our last away outing of the season is at Faithlegg on Tuesday, August 8, and we will take the names and collect the all-in fee of (€20) next Thursday, July 27, when the Seniors play in the open three-person scramble.

NEW ROSS LADIES

July 19, 18-hole stableford sponsored by Kathleen’s Hair Salon, South Street, New Ross: 1, Patricia Quinn (26), 37 points; 2, Carmel Fenlon (21), 36 points (last nine); 3, Breda McManus (23), 36 points (last nine).

This week ladies line out to compete for one of our big days, the President’s prize to the ladies. The President, J.J. Hoyne, will continue his celebration on the first weekend in August with the men’s competition.

That week will also feature the mixed event. A nice day on Wednesday will be the icing on the cake for the ladies! Thanks to J.J. for his generosity. The club matchplay is up and running but ladies are urged to have matches played before deadlines so that the competition can be completed in good time.

Ladies, you are reminded of the club classic from August 10 to 13. The prizes are fantastic and entry fees very competitive, so please spread the word and get your names on the timesheets.

This is a hugely-important fundraiser for the club. Anyone willing to sponsor tees or flags is asked to get in contact with the Captains or the manager.

The Mary McKenna team will travel to The Heath to play the home team on Thursday, July 27, at 12 noon. Best wishes to the team and managers on this important match. As always, support at the venue will be welcomed.
