Insitioge’s eager Beavers join Entente effort

-

It’s ‘ all hands on deck’ in Inistioge as the residents continue to prepare the village to look its best for the Entente Florale competition later this month.

Some of the youngest members of the community have signed up as volunteers, getting in on the act. Inistioge Beaver Scouts have been helping out every week with litter picking, weeding and planting.

Recently they took on the job of tidying the large area at St Colmcille’s Well, a well-known landmark in Inistioge and have worked on the Poyntz Road next to the River Nore.

The Beaver Scout leaders, in partnership with Margaret Jernigan of Inistioge Tidy Towns, have taken the opportunity to educate the children about recycling. They are being taught which items can be recycled and how to distinguish between the different types of recycled materials.

One of the barriers to recycling in Ireland is the fact that people don’t have an adequate understanding of the things that can recycled and the things that cannot. This knowledge will be useful for the children both now and in the future, Ms Jernigan said.

Inistioge is one of just two Irish representatives in the Entente Florale competition this year. It has set itself the target of winning a gold medal. Just two towns and villages are nominated every year to represent each participating country with Dungarvan being the other Irish entry.

Inistioge’s participation in the Entente Florale competition is being led by Inistioge Tidy Towns which wishes to acknowledge the assistance provided by Kilkenny County Council and the Department of Rural and Community Development in its preparation for the competition.
