WEXFORD LADIES

As the great weather continues, our Senior ladies continue to excel with high scores and very competitiv­e golf. Thirty ladies played in a very closely-fought competitio­n on Monday, June 25.

Results: 1, Eileen Lauhoff (38), 30 points (back seven); 2, Maggie Hearne (15), 30 points (back seven); 3, Rosaleen Shiel (32), 30 points; 4, Kay McCabe (38), 29 points (back seven).

On Thursday, June 28, 65 ladies competed in the 3Ts tournament qualifier sponsored by Pettitt’s SuperValu, Wexford. It was a high-scoring competitio­n.

Results: 1, Geraldine Draper (24), 41 points; 2, Caroline Creane (35), 39 points; 3, Mary McMahon (38), 39 points; gross, Carmel Murphy, 28 points; Senior, Therese Glasheen (22), 36 points; nine-hole competitio­n, Marie Kehoe (18), 19 points; nearest the pin, Tara Dunne, 2m 10cms.

The popular 3Ts tournament is part of an awareness campaign to highlight the issue of suicide in Ireland. Entrants have the opportunit­y to play some fantastic clubs in the provincial rounds in September, with lucky qualifying teams proceeding to the All-Ireland final at the K Club Ryder Cup course.

Congratula­tions to our winner who goes forward to play in the regional round in September in the company of lady Captain Patricia, club profession­al Liam, and the qualifier from the men’s competitio­n.

Thursday’s (July 5) competitio­n is an open 18-hole singles stableford, sponsored Shoe Style Internatio­nal. There will be a presentati­on of prizes on the night.

Next Saturday, July 7, for open week, there is a two-person ladies’ and gents’ team event sponsored by Boggan’s Motors.

A reminder to collect your tickets for the holiday draw which are available in the clubhouse. All members are asked to sell two tickets each.

Winners can either take the holiday or the cash value. All members are asked to support the draw as it is an important fundraiser for the club.

Deepest sympathies to Margaret Atkinson on the loss of her mother, Mary, who passed away peacefully on Monday, June 25. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam dílis.

ROSSLARE

Two important competitio­ns were played in Rosslare over the past week. On Sunday week, the qualifying round of the golfer of the year was played with the matchplay concluding on Saturday, the same day as the Kerlogue Cup mixed foursomes was played.

Sixteen pairs went through to the matchplay which will be played during July.

G.O.Y. qualifying round: 1, N. Griffin (10), 43 points; 2, Killian Corkery (12), 42 points; 3, Liam Duggan (6), 40 points; gross, Paul Murphy (+1), 39 points; vet., John Hanrick (15), 34 points.

Sixteen players from the above competitio­n went through to the matchplay, with some very exciting matches. In the final the golf was brilliant, with Willie Cuddihy beating Gary Collins on the 20th.

Gary (+3) was conceding 14 shots to Willie and put up a great show. The crucial holes were the 13th and 14th which were both halved in birdies.

On the way to the final, Willie beat Kevin Foran, Derek Evans and Thomas Rowe while Gary got the better of Derek Wickham, Paul Murphy and Eddie Fortune.

Saturday was a good day for the Cuddihy family as Alan and Bernadette led the qualifying round of the Kerlogue Cup mixed foursomes which is sponsored by Philip and Paula Stafford.

Our two last remaining teams on the inter-club scene made their exits of late. The South Leinster team lost to Coollattin and the Senior Cup team were beaten by Blainroe.

ROSSLARE LADIES

Bathed in glorious sunshine and donning beautiful summer golf style, the Rosslare ladies were out in force on Tuesday for Captain Jim Cullimore’s prize to the ladies.

And what a stunning prize...modern, elegant Waterford Crystal champagne flutes including a magnum of bubbly to enjoy. Thank you Captain Jim.

It was all to play for in this strokes competitio­n as there was a great run on the ball, with bunkers coming into play more, the rough proving ever challengin­g, and the greens in excellent condition.

With good fortune and skilful golf, this coveted majors prize was won by an ecstatic Irene Fortune with an excellent score of 67. Bravo Irene.

WEXFORD

Last weekend we had our Captain’s (Jackie Lynn) prize which was very well supported, with 286 members competing to qualify for one of the 33 slots (30 nett and three gross) in the nine-hole play-off on Sunday evening.

The scores were much tighter that previous years, with only four shots separating the top 30 nett players.

Martin Scallan (13), Pat ‘Kenny’ Walsh (12), Jonathan Walsh (12) and James Murphy (11), all with 70 nett, were the top qualifiers after the first 18 holes, and the three gross qualifiers were Mark Goodison (81), Martin Walsh (81) and Rhys Clarke (82).

A former Captain, current executive committe member and trustee of the club, Pat ‘Kenny’ Walsh, was the winner of Jackie Lynn’s Captain’s prize with a total score of 105. ‘Kenny’ has been a great servant of our club over many years and it would be hard to imagine a more popular winner.

In addition to the Captain’s prize, ‘Kenny’ also won the green jacket sponsored by Paul Harrington which is presented each year to the winner of this major tournament.

Pascal Kavanagh (11), a former winner of the Captain’s prize in 1996, was in second place just half a stroke behind with 105.5. Third was James Murphy (12) with 107.

The ladies played last Tuesday’s competitio­n in very hot conditions. It was a one of the warmest days of the season so far.

The Challenge Cup team had a great win over New Ross in Wexford on June 25, while the Intermedia­te team unfortunat­ely lost to Tramore in Gowran on the same day.
