Kilmokea gets smart with innovative videos

-

Kilmokea Gardens on Great Island have launched an innovative series of videos illustrating both the history of Kilmokea and the richness of the lush gardens.

The rich history presented begins with the mythological account of the arrival of Ceasair with 49 women and three men who took shelter at Kilmokea which was then called Bun Suaimne and later Mileadach. They go on to outline the story of the seventh century monks who set up an international seminary and a place of education to which monks and scholars from many other European countries came. Next came the Vikings who formed alliances with the native Irish and a son of Brian Ború, High King of Ireland, married a daughter of Ragnal and the amazing history continues.

Emma Hewlett introduced her innovative idea to the audience, explaining that she filmed, edited and created the videos herself as a direct response to Ireland’s Ancient East’s theme of ‘Storytelling’ to assist visitors experience a memorable time throughout their visit to the region. Visitors to the gardens can watch these videos on their own smart phones as they visit the gardens by reading the QR codes on each of the seven story boards placed throughout the lush woodland gardens and vegetable garden. Emma said: ’Surviving in the digital world in which we live means that through offering interesting information in a digital format, appeals to many and it assists them to visualise events of the past and appreciate life of the present moment.’
