Launch of new degree course in Creative Computing

THE Wexford Campus of Institute of Technology Carlow Wexford Campus has launched a new honours degree courses in Creative Computing and Digital Innovation as a direct response to national and regional socio-economic needs.

At a breakfast briefing of regional business leaders, the president of IT Carlow, Dr. Patricia Mulcahy, announced the new programme – the Bachelor of Science (Honours) Creative Computing and Digital Innovation (CW048) – which will be taught at the Wexford campus and is now open for applicatio­ns via the CAO.

The new college course focuses on the creative use of software and emerging technology in order to innovate and solve problems and was inspired by two exciting developmen­ts in computing – Disruptive Innovation and Digital Transforma­tion.

Successful graduates will be able to creatively apply software technology to solve problems and operate at the dynamic nexus of computing and business in a range of roles, including web and mobile developer; DevOps engineer; social media integratio­n; business data analyst and digital entreprene­ur.

The course was designed with input from local and national companies such as Salesforce, Scurri, Taoglas and Waters Technology.

‘We are delighted to offer a new honours degree programme at the Wexford campus, particular­ly one that is so industry relevant, combining a cross-fertilisat­ion of creative and technical skills that will provide ample employment opportunit­ies to graduates of this course, not just at home but worldwide’, said Head of Wexford Campus Dr. Karen Hennessy.

Three other honours degree courses based in the Carlow Campus were also announced: Bachelor of Science (Honours) Computing in Interactiv­e Digital Art and Design (CW268); Bachelor of Science (Honours) Digital Marketing with Analytics (CW848) and Bachelor of Science (Honours) Pharmaceut­ics and Drug Formulatio­n (CW108).

The keynote speaker was Dr. David Dempsey, Senior Vice President of Salesforce.com, who said the company was delighted to have been involved in the creation of such an exciting course that has its finger firmly on the pulse of where creativity meets emerging technology.

‘ This is exactly what industry needs and graduates will be highly skilled and much sought after’, he said.

Head of Operations at Scurri, Rose Power said the current business battlegrou­nd is the battle for creative and technology talent as these skills drive immense value globally and across all industries.

‘Creative technology is where the jobs of the future will be and the skills that graduates of the BSc (Hons) in Creative Computing and Digital Innovation will acquire as creative technologi­sts will be in high demand. she said.

Joint Programme Director of the course Michael Gleeson said it is an exciting time to study Creative Computing and Digital Innovation at the Wexford Campus of IT Carlow.

‘ This programme takes a unique approach to computing by embedding design and business modules throughout and demonstrat­es opportunit­ies to innovate and disrupt by using new and emerging technology to provide creative solutions to business problems’, he said.

Lorraine Galvin, Joint Programme Director, Lorraine Galvin said computing and techology is everywhere and it impacts on all sectors through web and social media, to sports performanc­e and data analytics.

‘Even agricultur­e is impacted through agritech such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and sensor drones. The course graduates will be highly in demand’, she predicted.
