LISTERLIN TIDY TOWNS

Following recent public meetings a Listerlin Tidy Towns Group has now been formed. Many thanks go to all who showed interest and promised help when the inaugural works begin especially Stephen O’Connor and Mary Cashin from Kilkenny County Council for their guidance and support. The objective of the group is to enhance and maintain the general area in particular tidying up the approach roads and providing filled planters at different points.

The new committee comprises Fidelis Doherty as chairperso­n and PRO, secretary, Dolores Doherty, Joint treasurers, Marie Ryan and Lorraine O’Sullivan with Eleanor Ryan, Dermot Moore, Anne O’Sullivan, Séamus Kennedy, Martin and Lorraine Bookle, and Dominic and Sharon Verall also members.

Financial support to this newly formed group would be much appreciate­d in helping getting the project off the ground. Anyone, who would like to make a donation can do so by contacting any of the above committee and if any person would like to join the group, they are more than welcome to do so.

DOWN MEMORY LANE

The recent death of Tom Murphy from Tinneranny recalls the historic day some 61 years ago when he and his comrades brought home the first ever Kilkenny Hurling Championsh­ip to Tullogher. On an atrocious wet Nowlan Park with torrential rain pouring down they outscored Young Ireland’s Gowran by 4-4 to 1-3 in the Junior Final.

FUND RAISER

Our Lady of Lourdes Secondary School are having a clothes collection in order to raise funds to replace the tarmac in the yard used for Physical Education and other school events. All donations of clothes, paired shoes, handbags, scarves, bags, ties, belts, soft toys and bed sheets would be greatly appreciate­d all in good condition.

Anyone with any of these items that they do not require can black sack bag them and bring to the office in the school from 8.30 a.m. to 4 p.m. any time before December 12.

SPECIAL MASS

There will be a Special Mass with Anointing of the sick for the Over-55s of Rosbercon Parish in the Parish Hall on Sunday, December 9. Following the Mass there will be refreshmen­ts and a musical interlude concluding with the annual Parish Draw at 4.30 p.m.

COMMUNITY ALERT AGM

The Tullogher-Rosbercon Community Alert AGM took place recently with a large attendance. The value of the parish text alert service in the past year was outlined with approximat­ely 420 households receiving 68 text alerts during the past year. The text alert scheme is open to households in the parish to join at any time and if any remaining households wish to do so, please contact any of the committee or contact the Community Alert phone number 083 1999585. Any suspicious activity should be reported, as soon as it is noticed, to this number which should be added to each person’s mobile phone contact list.

The past year also saw Tullogher-Rosbercon Community Alert install grant aided Emergency Response Units in the homes of a greatly increased number of eligible parishione­rs. This valuable parish initiative can be of great benefit to some parishione­rs with all the administra­tion taken care of by the Community Alert committee representa­tive. Garda Conor Cleere attended the AGM and outlined the value of a community alert structure in supporting Gardaí in rural communitie­s throughout South Kilkenny in reducing opportunit­ies for crimes to be committed through increased vigilance and communicat­ion between local people. He also outlined a range of practical steps households can take to reduce the possibilit­y of being burgled, and answered a series of questions from those present.

The officers elected for the following year were as follows: George Walsh (chairman), Bridget Healy (secretary), John Kent (treasurer) and Patrick Bookle (PRO). In addition, the committee members represent each area of the parish.
