SCHOOLS CHESS

Duncannon National School performed very well in the Wexford Primary Schools Chess Tournament last Saturday in the Brandon House. Nearly 100 children from all over the county took part. We had a great turnout with over 14 players representi­ng Duncannon N. S. We ‘bagged’ a bunch of medals. Rosanne Nolan and Thomas Nolan each won bronze in under-eight. Kyle Shannon won bronze in under-11. Aaron Ely brought home the gold in under-12, while Dan Nolan got silver and Cora Foley won bronze in under-13. Thank you to all the parents who came along to support and thank you to our chess mentors Syd and Glyn, who were on hand to help out.

ST JAMES’ GAA. LOTTO

There was no winner of the €8,900 jackpot in last Tuesdays draw. The winning numbers were 5, 12, 21 and 25. St James’ Club had one match-three winner; Paul Barron, Battlestow­n. ACTIVE RETIREMENT

Next monthly meeting is on Monday, December 3, in St Louis Day Care Centre, start 2.15 p.m. This will be a fun meeting with music and guess who from photos. Hook Rural Tourism AGM will take place on Monday next, November 26, in St Mary’s Hall, Fethard-on-Sea, at 8 p.m. All members are invited to attend.

DUNCANNON ICA

The October meeting of Duncannon ICA guild was held on Monday, 15th at St Louis Day Care Centre. The president, Gretta, was delighted to introduce three new members: Margaret Hodman, Anna Walsh and Deborah Duffin-Whitton, and a warm welcome was extended to them by the members present.

The Federation meeting held on September 24, hosted by Duncannon ICA, at the Day Care Centre, was greatly enjoyed by ICA members who travelled from all corners of Co. Wexford.

Gretta thanked members for being such hospitable hosts and for providing such a lovely display of home-baking for the tea, served after the business of the meeting.

The meeting was addressed by representa­tives from Pieta House and Wexford Mental Health, who will benefit from the ICA charity walk to be held in Kennedy Park. Pieta House, 14 Francis Street, Wexford, offers a profession­al counsellin­g service in a warm, friendly and non-judgementa­l atmosphere – Office 053 9122787 – Helpline (1800) 247 247.

The next federation meeting will be held in the Riverbank Hotel on November 26 and members are asked to bring along their rosettes for the memory tree.

Gretta organised a cookery demonstrat­ion by Mary Kelly, Camross, on October 4. The profits from this successful night went towards scholarshi­ps to An Grianán. Mary O’K and Rosaleen were the lucky recipients from the Duncannon Guild.

It was decided to run a bus to the ‘Knit and Stitch’ Show in the RDS if there was enough interest.

Recipes for a book on ‘Breads and Bracks’ to be launched at the Ploughing Championsh­ips, 2019 must be entered before mid-January, to be considered for inclusion.

The guest speaker was Oonagh Trehin, Fethard-on-Sea, who is a registered Nutritioni­st and gives evidence-based advice on all aspects of nutrition. Having studied, qualified and worked in Great Britain, she has returned home and set up a nutrition consultanc­y ‘Little O’Nutrition’.

The competitio­n for the ‘ Most Colourful autumn Leaf’ was won by Deirdre, with Rosaleen second and Margaret third. Kathleen served a welcome cup of tea and the raffle prizes were won by Teresa, Deirdre, Kathleen and Rosaleen. The competitio­n for the November meeting is to collect a list of the many words ‘as Gaeilge’ in our environmen­t. This is in preparatio­n for the November Federation meeting where there will be a prize awarded to the guild who finds the most words and phrases.

HEARTSAVE

South-West Wexford Heartsave would like to thank all of those that donated to their recent, successful, fundraisin­g coffee morning and cake sale. We really appreciate the support and hope that you enjoyed the morning also. The money raised will go towards maintenanc­e of the defibrilla­tors, and training of local people in their use. VEGGIE GROUP

The Ballyculla­ne Organic Veggie group wish to inform you that we have now changed our meeting times. During the autumn/ winter months we now meet on a Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. and on Saturday mornings at 11 a.m. Our vegetable plot is behind the village hall in Ballyculla­ne where we grow various fruit and vegetables throughout the year. TINTERN REVIEW

The 2018 Tintern Review is hot off the printing press and currently on sale throughout the parish and beyond. This year’s edition includes articles on Operation Transforma­tion, Ballyculla­ne Ploughing, Gusserane GAA, Gusserane School, the Mullinderr­y Mill as well as many other topics of local interest. The cost is only €7 and sales are expected to be brisk in the lead up to Christmas.

GAA CLUB AGM

Gusserane O’Rahillys GAA Club have set their annual general meeting for 7.45 p.m. on Saturday, December 8. All members and intending members are invited to attend. Mass the previous evening, Friday the 7th, at 7 p.m. in Gusserane will be for deceased members of the club.

CHRISTMAS ROAD RUN

There will be a Christmas Lights Road Run on December 9. Registrati­on is at 4 p.m. and it starts in Campile. It will travel through the villages of Dunmain, Ballyculla­ne, Saltsmills, Fethard-on-Sea, Templeton, Ramsgrange, Duncannon and finish in Arthurstow­n with hot food served compliment­s of the Kings Bay Inn, Arthurstow­n.
