Rís pupils claim chess top prizes

BUNSCOIL RÍS Chess Club claimed the top prizes at the Wex­ford Chess Pri­mary Schools Com­pe­ti­tion held in the Bran­don House Ho­tel.

An amaz­ing 35 stu­dents gave up their Satur­day to rep­re­sent the school at this event and in spite of stiff com­pe­ti­tion from 95 par­tic­i­pants, they bat­tled it out to win the Best Club in the Com­pe­ti­tion Tro­phy.

The Best Over­all Player in the Cham­pi­onship hon­ours were shared by Chris­tian Siko­rski and Jo­hann Shawn. Both boys achieved max­i­mum scores of seven each, hav­ing played and won all their seven games.

The chil­dren also brought home a num­ber of in­di­vid­ual awards as fol­lows: Emil­i­jus Valanti­nas - 1st - U14, Chris­tian Siko­rski - 1st - U12, Jo­hann Shawn - 1st - U10 (won on max seven points), Arthur Kwiecien - 2nd -U10 (six points), Tadhg Roche - 3rd - U9, Fabian Siko­rski - Bunscoil Nic Amh­laoidh - 1st - U7 - (won on max points of seven).

A school spokesper­son said: ‘ Our 35 brave war­riors won enough games be­tween them to keep us at the top of the Wex­ford Chess Pri­mary Schools Score Board - a fan­tas­tic achieve­ment,’

The chess club op­er­ates ev­ery Fri­day in Bunscoil Rís and the chil­dren are tu­tored by for­mer Bunscoil Rís Prin­ci­pal, Brian MacMa­hon and Vic­tor Fur­ness.

‘Well done to ev­ery­body in­volved in mak­ing the day a great suc­cess for the chil­dren – thanks to Vic­tor, Brian, the prin­ci­pal and staff of Bunscoil Rís and the par­ents for all their co-op­er­a­tion and to Chess Wex­ford for or­gan­is­ing a great event.’
