Rís pupils claim chess top prizes

BUNSCOIL RÍS Chess Club claimed the top prizes at the Wexford Chess Primary Schools Competitio­n held in the Brandon House Hotel.

An amazing 35 students gave up their Saturday to represent the school at this event and in spite of stiff competitio­n from 95 participan­ts, they battled it out to win the Best Club in the Competitio­n Trophy.

The Best Overall Player in the Championsh­ip honours were shared by Christian Sikorski and Johann Shawn. Both boys achieved maximum scores of seven each, having played and won all their seven games.

The children also brought home a number of individual awards as follows: Emilijus Valantinas - 1st - U14, Christian Sikorski - 1st - U12, Johann Shawn - 1st - U10 (won on max seven points), Arthur Kwiecien - 2nd -U10 (six points), Tadhg Roche - 3rd - U9, Fabian Sikorski - Bunscoil Nic Amhlaoidh - 1st - U7 - (won on max points of seven).

A school spokespers­on said: ‘ Our 35 brave warriors won enough games between them to keep us at the top of the Wexford Chess Primary Schools Score Board - a fantastic achievemen­t,’

The chess club operates every Friday in Bunscoil Rís and the children are tutored by former Bunscoil Rís Principal, Brian MacMahon and Victor Furness.

‘Well done to everybody involved in making the day a great success for the children – thanks to Victor, Brian, the principal and staff of Bunscoil Rís and the parents for all their co-operation and to Chess Wexford for organising a great event.’
