Newbawn pioneers carry on tradition
ONE hundred and 20 years ago New Ross priest Fr James Cullen founded the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association, a group which has helped thousands of people over the decades.
Within a few miles of his home children in the Newbawn area have been following the principles he set out on December 28, 1898.
Newbawn 5th and 6th class pupils, including Anna Elmes, Mia Byrne, Michael Connors, Aoibhe Miskella, Darragh Guinan, Josh Katus, Aaron Colfer, Jason Gaffney, Steven Byrne, Tomás Cunningham, Paddy Cash, Alfie White, Mathew Myers, Corey French and Brian Rossiter were presented with their achievement certificate for becoming a young pioneer at Newbawn church.
In attendance was their teacher Michelle O’Grady, Fr. Jimmy Moynihan and Tessie Dunphy, who has been secretary of Newbawn PTAA for over 20 years.
