DUNCANNON ICA GUILD
The November meeting of Duncannon of ICA was held in the St Louis Day Care Centre on Tuesday, 12th with 14 members present.
Since the last meeting members have been busy participating in events at guild and federation level. The exercise classes in Ramsgrange with Maureen Costello have been such a success that it was decided to continue with another six-week session.
Marie took second place at Federation in the ‘If I were an Animal’ competition. She chose to be a giraffe.
Some members attended a wonderful night of drama at St Michael’s Theatre where a group from America presented the Eugene O’Neill play ‘Long Journey into Night.’.
At the Federation table quiz Marie and Catherine were placed third ably assisted by Breda from Camross, answering questions such as: What colour is the M on the McDonald sign? How many ribs in the body? Name the smallest county in Ulster. Unfortunately, the visual round left them recognising the face but not the name.
Let the Change Begin was the title of an evening hosted by the guild and facilitated by Aileen Kennedy, a colour consultant. Aileen led the group through a presentation on discovering their best colours so as to look their best on all occasions and enhance their style personality. Did you know that the cross-body bag is not a good look as it cuts the body in half at an unflattering angle and black is an unflattering colour for the Irish complexion, navy being a better option? Between exercise classes and style council members should be looking their best in time for Christmas and our Christmas lunch to be held in Aldridge Lodge in February.
Catherine gave a most interesting insight into the significance of the poppy as a war remembrance. The reason the poppy is used to remember those who have given their lives in battle is because they are the flowers which grew on the battlefields after WW1 ended. This is described in the poem In Flanders Fields by John McCrae. In 2014 an installation of 888,000 poppies were placed at the moat of the Tower of London by 7000 volunteers to honour the dead. These were later sold for 25 pounds each and the proceeds divided between six charities.
Deirdre and Eileen were our hostesses for the night and the raffle was won by Helena, Mary and Deborah. Marie won the competition with the following Limerick.
