FETHARD ST MOGUE’S GAA

Our Blast from the Past this week goes back all the way to 1997 and only the second ever Rackard League Football title for the young boys from Poulfur/ Fethard.

Coached by John Hehir in what was his last underage success before returning to his native Clare the boys had a very shaky start by losing to Clongeen in their first game.

Wins over Ramsgrange, Cushinstown, Taghmon and a play-off victory over Clongeen put them through to the District Final where they had a comprehensive victory over Ramsgrange.

In the county semi-final where defeated a fancied Glynn-Barntown side and went on to play Kilrush in the County Final. First half goals from Declan White and

Shane Tubrid help put them two points clear at the break. The second half was keenly contested but Kilrush looked to have stolen victory with a late pointed free before Patrick Mernagh equalised with a last minute point.

In the replay Fethard took advantage of the wind in the first half to build up a commanding lead. Goals from Diarmuid Bird and Declan White and points from Patrick Mernagh left them nine up at the break. A whirlwind start to the second half with goals from Seán Foley and Declan White put them well in command. Kilrush staged a late come back but Man of the Match Daniel White and Nicky Rice at the centre of the defence held strong as Fethard won on a 4-6 to 2-5 scoreline.

The team on that historic day were Graham Power (Ramstown), Niall Swan, Nicky Rice, Diarmuid Murphy, Mark White, Daniel White, Brian Hehir, Kevin Morrissey, Patrick Mernagh, Seán Foley, Diarmuid Bird (Capt), Thomas Colfer, Shane Tubrid, Declan White, Alan Tubrid. Subs Tony Keenan, Shane Colfer, Eoin Murphy, Kevin Boland, Wayne Drought, William O’Donoghue, Ciaran Cullen, Ruaidhri Hehir, Mark Morrissey, Graham Power (Fethard), Jamie White and Aidan Molloy
