Man tasered after violent use of hurl

A MAN who was acting violently, swinging a hurl around and shouting at people in Pearse Park in New Ross ended up being tasered after refusing to comply with the Garda Armed Support Unit.

Gardaí received complaints about a man in his forties acting in a very aggressive manner in Pearse Park at 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Armed with a hurl, he was engaging with people on what was a glorious day and a busy one in the park.

A garda spokespers­on said local gardaí, assisted by the armed unit, attended the scene and tried to speak with the man.

‘He refused to desist from acting in a threatenin­g manner. Despite repeated requests for him to drop the weapon he refused to comply and was threatenin­g towards gardaí. He was disarmed by the Armed Support Unit and tasered. He was placed in Garda custody and detained under the Mental Health Act.’
