Wexford writer features in new RTÉ radio series
A LOCAL writer has been selected to feature in a new RTÉ radio series. The programme, Keywords, is presented by Zoe Comyns on RTÉ Radio 1 Extra on Sundays at 8pm and this Sunday, Wexford writer Alison Martin will read from her piece, ‘Flickers’.
The piece of short fiction is set at Easter, when the President urged householders to shine a light for frontline workers and those affected by Covid-19. And while the inspiration for the story is serious, it is an uplifting take on hope. Martin wrote ‘Flickers’ following an open call by Keywords, which has featured acclaimed writer Eimear McBride, among others.
Martin says: ‘At a time like this, I think it is more important than ever to look for the humour in our everyday lives and to keep wondering. Flickers is about how we communicate with each other through light and about the necessity to keep asking what if. I hope listeners enjoy it - it’s an unlikely romance.’
Living in Wexford Town, Martin is a writer and playwright. Her work has been presented at Wexford Arts Centre, the National Opera House, The
Source and Axis, among others.
Keywords, which has been running since April 26, has commissioned work by established and emerging writers, sound artists and poets. Each week, contributors are guided by a keyword and next Sunday’s keyword is Windows.
According to New Normal Culture, the production team behind the series: ‘ The aim for the series is to encourage new writing and audio production and empower people to record from their own devices.’
For anyone interested in contributing to the series, the final keyword for the series is Maps and submissions are due by 5pm Thursday May 28. For details, see @keywordspod on Twitter.
Keywords airs at 8pm on Sunday on RTÉ Radio 1 Extra and will be available as a podcast afterwards.
