Driver made a mistake

-

AN honest mistake was made when Elizabeth O’Connor (52), 1 St Munn’s Terrace, Taghmon, drove without insurance in place, Judge Brian O’Shea concluded.

The lack of cover came to light after Ms O’Connor was stopped by Garda Leon Fleming at Newtown Road on the afternoon of September 18 last.

The certificate she produced at the barracks in response to Garda Fleming’s request showed that cover kicked in less than three hours later.

She told the District Court that her husband arranges the insurance.

A fine of €100 was recorded but no disqualification was imposed.

The reopening of the allotments in New Ross has been greeted with joy by regulars, who are back sewing vegetables and exchanging ideas.

Assistant CE Scheme supervisor Joanne Kolbeins said the 30 plus regulars – aged 18 up to 70 – who grow vegetables at the allotments, were really missing being up there.

‘It was absolutely brilliant. Everyone is keeping their distance but we always do anyway. We are a great little group: always swapping seeds and giving each other tips.’

Joanne said everyone has their own way of sewing veg and everyone helps each other out.

Open 24/7, the allotments have been a godsend to the people of New Ross since they were opened in Irishtown in 2014, providing a dedicated space where vegetables can be grown and also a social outlet.

With Irish, Latvian, Lithuanian and other nationalities attending, different growing techniques are used on the plots.

As Joanne says: ‘It doesn’t matter how much you know about gardening, you can always learn something new. A lot of people were a bit disappointed they couldn’t go to the allotments as they had potatoes down. The frost got them but they recovered. They come up here planning to spend a half an hour and spend hours. They go for a walk around and people give each other vegetables. It’s wonderful to see and students also come to have a look sometimes.’
