A cheque for € 15,000 has been presented to New Ross Community Hospital following a hugely successful fundraising night at the Brandon House Hotel during which a painting was bought for € 15,000.

A new 22-bed wing is planned for the facility to ensure the best of modern standards for future residents and the people of New Ross town and district came out in support, raising € 34,000.

A novel part of the night saw around € 20,000 raised through a raffle and auction facilitated by Anne Carton of PN O’Gorman Auctioneers. € 15,000 was raised from the sale of a painting of the Dunbrody Famine ship created by local celebrated artist, Danny Brennan, to Harry Twomey, a Local Election candidate for

Fine Gael.

A painting donated by Ben Dolan was sold for € 1,800, with the raffle bringing in a significant sum also.

“It was an absolute success story of a night. We want to thank everyone who performed and participated and attended. We also want to sincerely thank Danny Brennan for donating the fantastic painting.

A lot of people have been touched by the support they and family members have received from the community hospital over the years,” said New Ross Community Hospital Deputy Chairperson, Seamus Kennedy. “The donation was made with a good heart and great spirit. There was such a great spirit on the night that it blew the whole auction out of proportion.”

Seamus said people interested in holding a fundraising event for the hospital or who are interested in making a donation towards the cost of the new wing can contact its management staff on 051 421305.

The gala dinner is set to become an annual social fundraising event.

Seamus thanked The Rower/ Inistioge GAA Football Club for raising € 1,600 through an all day car wash recently, saying the hospital benefits from the goodwill and generosity of many people in the greater New Ross area.

He appealed to people who know someone who is elderly and vulnerable to consider contacting the hospital. “People should never be afraid to pick up the phone and say someone is in dire straits as we have the leeway to deal with that.”
