CLONROCHEPOULPEASTY CIVIC AWARD FOR MEALS ON WHEELS

Congratulations and well done to volunteers from Clonroche/ Poulpeasty Meals on Wheels who recently received a Municipal District New Ross Civic Award.

Clonroche/Poulpeasty Meals on Wheels was set up in 2006, originally for the Clonroche/ Poulpeasty area, however, expanded due to demand to the surrounding parishes of Ballywilliam, Templeudigan, Courtnacuddy and Davidstown.

They are a registered charity, with the management of the service and delivery of meals entirely undertaken by volunteers whose contribution is greatly appreciated.

It is a ‘ demand led’ service, providing up to 6 meals per week to the clients. Every new client is visited to ascertain their needs, identify dietary requirements and provide them with information about the service. Referrals are taken from the area Public Health Nurses, Wexford General Hospital, Waterford University Hospital, Enniscorthy Community Hospital and relatives.

All of the clients are in receipt of HSE Home Support Services with the exception of a short-term service to generally fit older persons, who have been discharged from hospital, for example post-surgery. Therefore, they provide a valuable service to enable older people to be supported and remain in their own homes for as long as possible.

Meals are cooked in FFrench’s Cloch Ban, a local pub/restaurant in Clonroche. The meals consist of a main course and soup or dessert. The menu is varied over 2 weeks, with choice of 2 main courses daily and salads provided on request. The staff of the Cloch Ban are very attentive to the needs of clients of the Meals on Wheels service, and they also run fundraisers for the service. The clients pay €5 towards their meal with the balance paid from HSE grant, a grant from Cllr Bridin Murphy and the various fundraising events.

The number of meals provided fluctuates with generally an increase in the numbers provided during the winter. Presently we are providing 491 meals to 34 clients monthly.

Cllr Bridin Murphy said: ‘I am delighted to see representatives of the volunteers from Clonroche/ Poulpeasty Meals on Wheels here tonight and it is with pleasure that I am presenting this Municipal District New Ross Civic Award to them in recognition of the tremendous work they have done over the last 18 years.’
