The Big Yin goes back to the coalface of his Glaswegian childhood and travels across the ‘wee country’ to knit a memoir of sorts that tells of comedy and adventure and colourful characters in a city and country that has changed utterly. “Glasgow used to be a black city…” and now “it looks like a watercolour” he writes, but this is no misery memoir. “I’ve always hated that shite ‘woe-is-me’ style of writing” he writes. Rather, this is the account of “an anthropological rarity, a Glaswegian who is a natural optimist.”
