BLACKADDER GOES FORTH (1988) It might seem odd to top this list with a comedy, but this brilliant series cast an acerbic eye on the life of the Tommie during World War I. The nal montage, beginning with our heroes going over the top before dissolving into a shot of a poppy eld, is a stand-out. BIRDSONG (2012)
Sebastian Faulks wrote one of the nest novels about WWI, and it became a BAFTA-winning miniseries with Eddie Redmayne in the role of the British army lieutenant who recalls moments of love and war in the trenches of France. Clémence Poésy and Richard Madden co-star. PARADE’S END ( 2012- 2013)
This ve-part series, based on the novels of Ford Madox Ford, followed the fortunes of people from di erent backgrounds through the War and beyond. Benedict Cumberbatch headed a strong cast that also included Rebecca Hall, Freddie Fox and Rufus Sewell. THE MONOCLED MUTINEER (1986) Alan Bleasdale created this controversial account of the true-life gure of Percy Toplis, who led a British army mutiny during the First World War. Paul McGann took the lead role, with Cherie Lunghi and Timothy in support.
