To do this week
1 With lots of pruning at this time of year, keep secateurs and loppers in good condition – cleaned after use and rubbed with oil. Have blades sharpened or replaced if necessary.
2 Top up bird feeders and position new ones so you can see activity from inside the house. 3 If you have apple trees, winter moth can be a problem, laying eggs from November on, which hatch into caterpillars in spring and start eating the fruits as they form. A grease band wrapped around the trunk prevents the wingless female moths from climbing up the tree. 4 Winter-flowering heather (left) comes in many varieties for planting now in borders and containers. 5 Sow seeds of tender plants on a warm windowsill or in a propagator and take a look at seed catalogues for ideas for next year.
