Deutschland 86 kicks off, plus Screen News and Insider’s media week

Deutschland 83 was a powerful, award-winning series in which Jonas Nay played Martin Rauch, an East German border patrol guard who was plucked from his rather dull job and given a new assignment: to become an undercover spy for the Stasi foreign service in West Germany. As a rookie spy, his decisions constantly put his cover at risk and force his agency to take extreme measures. As season two opens, Martin has been banished by the Stasi to an orphanage in Angola. It’s now 1986, East Germany is broke, Perestroika is real, terrorism is plaguing Europe, the AIDS crisis is intensifying and the struggle against apartheid rages Martin’s life in exile changes when his Aunt Lenora (Maria Schrader) shows up and conscripts him into her latest plan to drum up a hard currency abroad and keep the communist project alive. Together, they set off on an adventure through Africa, western Europe and finally back home to East Germany. Can mafioso-style capitalism save communism just in the nick of time? Watch this space.
