* Phil Lynott fans are in for a treat over Christmas with a new documentary on RTÉ chronicling the story behind the making of the iconic video for Old Town. e documentary features interviews with many of those involved in the making of the video in 1982, and it revisits the Dublin locations where it was shot – including the Ha’penny Bridge, the bandstand in Herbert Park and the Long Hall pub in George’s Street. Interviewees include Phil’s mother, Philomena; his band mate Eric Bell; and his old friend and fellow musician, Brush Shiels. Ola.
* Another legendary Irish gure, Oscar Wilde, is being celebrated on BBC radio over Christmas in a four-part series, Born To Be Wilde. It features two of Wilde’s plays and two original creations. e Importance of Being Earnest stars Matthew Baynton, Abhin Galeya and Gemma Jones; while the new production of An Ideal Husband will star Miranda Raison as Laura Cheveley. e original works are e Warhol Years, a comedy drama following Wilde in America, starring Max Bennett as Wilde and Dervla Kirwan as his mother; Oscar and Constancy is a tragi-comedy about Wilde’s marriage to Constance, also starring Max Bennett (pictured) and Dervla Kirwan. e Born To Be Wilde season kicks o on BBC Radio Four on December 15.
* Four productions lmed in Northern Ireland are among the nominees for the 2019 Broadcast Awards. Lisa McGee’s Derry Girls is up for Best Comedy Programme; while three animated series, Sixteen South’s Claude, Jam Media’s Becca’s Bunch and Paper Owl’s Pablo have all been nominated in the Best Pre-School Programme category. e winners will be announced on February 6 at a ceremony in London’s Grosvenor Hotel.
