Dublin made me

The great Samuel Beckett is to be celebrated in his home village of Foxrock with a specially staged version of his radio play, All That Fall

- with Donal O’Donoghue

Samuel Beckett may have lived in Paris most of his adult life but there is a part of Dublin that will forever be his. All That Fall, originally written as a radio play, is the Nobel Laureate’s homage to his place of birth, Foxrock Village. It is a complex work, typically overlapping comedy and tragedy, and full of the sounds and sights of such local landmarks as the village train station, the racecourse at Leopardstown and Brighton Road.

On the 50th anniversary of being awarded the Nobel Prize for literature, and the 30th anniversary of his death, there will be a special staging of Beckett’s radio play about sex and death and all way stations in between at Tullow Church on Brighton Road in the south Dublin suburb. For a playwright who issued forensic details with each of his works, the location could not be more apposite.

In his childhood Beckett regularly attended Tullow Church with his mother and in 2016 a commemorative plaque was unveiled at the site by his niece. The cast of eight in this production, which will be directed by Cathal Quinn, are Geraldine Plunkett, Donncha Crowley, Neil Fleming, Michael Judd, Paul Marron, Deirdre Monaghan, Melissa Nolan and Matthew O’Brien. Regarded by some as ‘Beckett’s best play’, any stage version usually emphasises its wireless origins, with microphones hanging from the ceiling and the actors carrying their scripts.

Beckett in Foxrock: All That Fall is the fourth annual event honouring the writer’s close connection with the area. Tickets include a wine reception and there is also a photographic exhibition showing the many links between Beckett’s work and the Foxrock area.

All that Fall by Samuel Beckett will be presented by Tullow Parish and Mouth on Fire Theatre Company on March 23 at 8pm at Tullow Church, Brighton Road, Foxrock. Tickets from eventbrite.ie
