Travel Celebrate summer in Cork

This year’s Cork Midsummer Festival is on from June 13 to 23, with many exciting events for the whole family Among the highlights are:

Both BrokenCrow Theatre Company and ALSA Production­s present new work for family audiences – Miss Happiness and Miss

Flower and Tall Tail respective­ly.

Part of the Festival’s participat­ory and socially-engaged work is the Irish premiere of La Cocina Pública (The Public Kitchen) presented by Chilean company Teatro Container, bringing a kitchen in a shipping container to Cork’s South Parish. The aim is to connect both residents and visitors to the area through food and performanc­e.

The HandleBard­s, the world’s first cycling theatre company, are putting on an all-ages, high-energy version of The Tempest in Fitzgerald Park.

Presented in partnershi­p with Carlow Arts Festival, Kaleider bring their large transparen­t Pig to Emmet Place, a bold installati­on that offers passersby the opportunit­y to contribute to, and spend, a community fund.

Mosh Split, a high-energy circus show from Finnish circus group Sisus Sirkus will take place at Elizabeth Fort.

The Cork Proms at Cork Opera House, curated by director Wayne Jordan and conductor John O’Brien, comprises of three successive concerts – Midsummer (June 21), Broadway (June 22) and Diva (June 23).

Other events for family audiences include a programme celebratin­g Criunniú na nÓg at Douglas Park; The Market, a beautiful market-themed wooden play universe for children from ages

2-8 by Festijeux; and Cork’s first Carnival of Science, two days of experiment­s, interactiv­e activities, garden games and big top shows coordinate­d by Lifetime Lab.
