Fashion Tommy & Zendaya
For the second season of their design collaboration, Tommy Hilfiger and actress/singer Zendaya went for a cinema-inspired campaign that was shot through the distinct lens of Steven Klein, who captured a group of confident women, including Zendaya, against a corporate and structured cityscape backdrop
After last season’s celebration of black womanhood, Zendaya and Hilfiger wanted to keep the momentum going. The late ’70s and early ’80s remained key references, but they changed tack on the time of day. Whereas the spring collection was filled with disco references and sparkle, this autumn’s offering is skewed toward daytime. Modernised versions of the leisure suit, wide-leg pants, and Carter-era wardrobe staples featured prominently. Vogue has called Zendaya a “fashion chameleon at heart” saying that “she has demonstrated her versatility at events, always toeing the line between edgy and elegant without missing a beat.” Zendaya launched her first fashion collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger, TommyXZendaya Spring 2019, and was also recently named the new face of Lancôme. Here she describes the creative process when collaborating with Tommy Hilfiger.
What are your favourite pieces of the collection?
Honestly, I love every piece in this collection but if I had to choose I would say the tailored suits, the polka dot tie-neck dress, and faux-fur leopard coat.
What did you learn from your first collection that you applied to this season?
I learned more about the design process and how to be more efficient at the different stages throughout product development.
Who are the inspirational women in your life?
The women in my family inspire me the most. Both my grandmothers, my mom, my aunties and my sisters play such an important role in my life.
What inspired you to use a constellation print this season?
We wanted to find something that tied back to the spring collection and felt that the constellation print was a nice continuation of the zodiac theme.
What was the most fun part of creating this collection?
It has been experimenting with the different prints and scales, and mixing them together. We wanted to create something fresh that women can also wear in their everyday lives.
What role has fashion played in your career?
It’s really helped me grow into the woman I am today. I’ve said it before that I don’t really have one style, but use fashion as a means of telling a story. Law [Zendaya’s stylist] and I have a lot of fun coming up with different personas in my looks, and I love showing up on the red carpet in something unexpected.
