- with Stephen Meyler

In the ancient Chinese calendar, the new year begins on January 25, when Chinese communities all around the world will welcome the Year of the Rat. Here in Ireland, the Dublin Chinese New Year Festival has a varied colourful programme of events lined up from January 24 to February 10, when the Irish Chinese community will share the many customs, games, music, performance and of course, food, associated with the new year. Here are just some events to look out for:

* Spring Festival Fair – two days of free music, colour and fun at the Dublin City Fruit and Vegetable Market at Smithfield. Ahead of its redevelopment, this Victorian market will reopen for the free, family-friendly celebration, based on traditional Chinese temple fairs. Celebrate with a jam-packed programme including workshops, performances, tasty food stalls and lots more.

* Many buildings and landmarks across Dublin and Kildare will light up in festive red to welcome Chinese New Year.

* Two days of family-friendly celebrations at Kildare village, including interactive presentations by special guests from China.

* A selection of galas and concerts featuring Chinese talent and culture, including Mongolian ethnic dance, acrobats and Peking opera.

* A myriad of food experiences and food tours to give you a real taste of Asia.

* Tours in English and Chinese to explore the rich Chinese culture of Dublin.

* Hands-on workshops for families to learn about Chinese traditions and arts.
