Feed your containers

-

In June, the garden is really starting to come into its own, especially in containers. It’s a good idea (if they haven’t already had a slow-release feed) to give them a regular liquid feed.

The trick is to give this little and often rather than in one big strong dose. Always follow the instructions and, if possible, make sure that your containers are slightly moist in advance of feeding as fertiliser can damage roots that are on the dry side. For containers that have flowering bedding like petunias, fuchsias, geraniums, etc., use a high potassium feed. If you can’t find one that has been designed for flowers, tomato feed can be used. It’s also an excellent time to do some deadheading, removing faded flowers that would otherwise go to seed. This forces the plant to continue developing its floral display.
