Movie release
Black Water: Abyss (nationwide in cinemas)
In 2007, the Aussie croc drama, Black Water, was an effective thriller based on the true story of a giant crocodile that terrorised a group of tourists in the Northern Territory. This sort of sequel takes an equally pulchritudinous group of young Aussies and sends them into a remote cave in the same region, where an equally large and equally hungry croc awaits. Though it offers a few thrills and spills along the way, this Ozploitation yarn is let down by its contrived, soap opera sub-plot and a race-against-time narrative that never manages to be the emotional, white-knuckle ride we require of the genre.
Screen news
Our food writer, Catherine Fulvio, will be back on our screens with a new series of Tastes Like Home on RT É One in September. For this series, Catherine will look back at some of the places they have visited and catch up with some of the people she got to meet along the way in Ireland and abroad. The series will also involve cooking and recreating some new dishes that viewers have been missing and which ‘tastes like home’ for them. Greed (Sony)
For the latest (seventh) collaboration between Steve Coogan and director Michael Winterbottom, Coogan takes on the role of obnoxious plutocrat Sir Richard McCreadie, a wheelerdealer who has made his money in the rag trade by exploiting sweat-shop labour in the Far East. In the hope of repairing his image following a damaging public enquiry, McCreadie decides to throw a lavish, star-studded 60th birthday party in Greece. While the satire is well intended and many barbs do land ( Greed also touches on reality television and the refugee crisis), not all of it feels terribly original. After all, ageing billionaires with trophy wives and impossibly white teeth are practically beyond parody.
