Fashion The Flutterflies summer collection

- with Janice Butler

Dublin jewellery designer Shock of Grey has expanded its range with some bright new pieces, perfect for the summer season ahead. Shock of Grey was founded by designer Sarah Carroll Kelly in 2019. Sarah specialises in contemporary jewellery in bold bright colours made from unpredictable materials such as birchwood, plywood, brass and clay. New pieces include earrings (stud and statement), rings and necklaces: New Wave earrings: laser-cut birchwood earrings that are “like a tiny canvas, a little picture on your ear featuring shapes like waves, sky and sun”. These are inspired by Sarah’s summers visiting family in Mayo and Sligo.

D Doodle: large D shapes in hand-painted birchwood ply with brass disc inspired by drawings of people in the sketchbooks of Sarah’s late brother Damian, who was an architect.

Megamelt: these wooden earrings look just like a melting ice-cream cone. Made from hand-painted laser-cut wood suspended from a brass disc with three brass teardrops.

Multi-shape necklaces: featuring a laser-cut plywood ball or semi-circle and a brass tube or semi-circle. The contrast of matte wood against the shiny brass makes these great pieces to brighten up a plain t-shirt or knit.

The inspiration for Sarah’s designs comes from many places “I studied ne art sculpture in Limerick School of Art & Design in the ’90s and I think the making of this jewellery is the miniature manifestation of those skills. I take inspiration from the world around me and am like a magpie collecting and keeping things that interest me so I always have a bank of reference material. It could be a vintage book, a piece of modern art, a building and its shapes, a colour combination from a child’s toy. I do hand drawings and doodles and they often turn into a shape that becomes an element of my jewellery. I love coming up with colour combinations and get a gut reaction when it hits the mark.” Shock of Grey pieces are stocked online at www.shockofgrey.com and in shops including Kilkenny Design Shop, Om Diva, IMMA Gift Shop, My Granny Likes It (Galway), Shells (Strandhill), Forest & Flock (Bantry), The Narrow Space (Clonmel), Constantia (Dunboyne), Handmade Design Studio (Mullingar), irishcraftsonline. com and miniandmartha.com.

Prices start at €28 for rings and stud earrings to €49 for larger earrings and necklaces.
