Nelson Mandela spent 18 years imprisoned here and a visitor a visit to Robben Island is a poignant experience. The prison closed in 1996 and the island is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

5 Drive the Garden Route

Stretching 300km along the south coast from Mossel Bay to Port Elizabeth through green landscapes with the second mildest climate on Earth, the Garden Route attracts visitors to its lakes, lagoons and mountains, as well as activities like hiking, winery visits and whale watching.
