BBC Culture recently invited a selection of film critics to submit their ten favourite films in a language other than English. The result is a Top 100 that featured 67 different directors from 24 countries and 19 languages. Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 epic, Seven Samurai, topped the poll, with de Sica’s Bicycle Thieves (1948) coming second, followed by Ozu’s 1953 masterpiec­e, Tokyo Story.

Taste of Cherry (Abbas Kiarostami, 1997) 10. The Wages of Fear (Henri-Georges Clouzot, 1953).
