Farewell to Rovers star Willie Curran

THE death has occurred of former Sligo Rovers player Willie Curran. The Derry native passed away at the age of 90 last Sunday.

His name is synonymous with his local club, but he will also be fondly remembered by Bit O’Red supporters of a certain vintage having played at The Showground­s for five years.

The centre-back joined Rovers in 1956 and went on to make 79 appearance­s in all competitio­ns until his departure in 1961.

Willie remained a prominent figure at Derry City for many years as a volunteer and holds the distinctio­n of being the first inductee in the club’s hall of fame.
