Sad passing of former county manager Paul

THE death has occurred of former Sligo county manager Paul Byrne. Mr Byrne, formerly of Thornhill on the Strandhill Road, passed away last weekend peacefully in Portiuncul­a Nursing Home, Multyfarnh­am, Co. Westmeath.

He was born in June 1932 in Longford, dedicated his working life to public service across several counties. His first role working in local authority was as a clerical officer with Sligo County Council when he took up the role in November 1949. He returned to Sligo in 1977 to serve as Sligo County Council manager until his retirement in January 1993. In intervenin­g years he also worked as town cerk in Kells, as a staff officer, county accountant county secretary on Donegal County Council, programme manager with the North Western Health Board and county manager in Roscommon County Council. Sympathies were conveyed to Paul’s family by cathaoirle­ach of Sligo County Council Cllr Dara Mulvey and acting chief executive Tom Kilfeather. Additional­ly, a statement released by Sligo County Council on Monday read: “Paul is remembered as a thorough gentleman and as an excellent administra­tor. “He was always supportive and encouragin­g to staff and took great pride in working with elected members to see Sligo grow and develop under his stewardshi­p.”
