More dumping on Knockbeg road in Collooney last week
A LOCAL councillor has this week highlighted more dumping on the Knockbeg Road in Collooney.
Cllr Thomas Healy said that there was more dumping there last week despite him raising the issue two weeks ago. He told the Sligo Weekender: “I contacted the environmental section of Sligo County Council two weeks ago when local residents alerted me to the dumping of white goods on land belonging to the Council on the Knockbeg road.
“This site has now attracted additional dumping with a large amount of rubble being dumped there last week.
“This needs to be nipped in the bud quickly or this will become a regular dumping ground. The site needs to be cleared and secured immediately in order to prevent further dumping,” he said.
Cllr Healy said the dumping was “especially reprehensible” as white goods, like fridges and washing machines, can be recycled for free at a number of locations. “The rubble can also be brought to local licensed landfill sites at a very low cost. Instead of being recycled these items are now a hazard to local people and an attraction for additional dumping.”
Cllr Healy said the danger was that other items could easily be dumped into the Owenmore River, potentially causing blockages and damaging fish life.
“Sligo County Council needs to act urgently on this issue and I am encouraging local people to contact the gardaí or their local representative if they witness further incidents. It is very important to prosecute these dumpers. Together we can put a stop to this,” he said.
