Age Friendly Programme is hosting an online cookery programme for older people as part of the Sligo Covid Community Resilience Plan. If you are interested in trying something new and sociable, the classes will be delivered by Zoom with a focus on practical cook along demonstrat­ions which promise to have a social, fun and chat element built in.

Funeral Masses are limited to 10 people and there are only six people permitted to attend a wedding.

While all Masses are online the churches of Enniscrone and Kilglass are open to visit, light a candle, say a prayer or spend some time with the Lord. Visiting hours are Enniscrone 10am to 8pm; Kilglass 10.30am to 7pm.

Covid-19 Support for older people.: Alone manage a national support line and additional supports for older people who have concerns or are facing difficulti­es regarding Covid-19. Profession­al staff are available to answer queries and give advice and reassuranc­e where necessary. The support line is open seven days a week, 8am – 8pm, by calling 081 8222024.

CASTLECONN­OR GAA: Underage coaches and helpers. We are currently working on putting coaches and helpers in place for all our underage teams. We start at under-six and go up to under-21. If there is anyone in the parish that would like to get involved, whether as a coach or just a helper, then please contact a member of the committee (email pro.castleconn­or. Sligo@gaa.ie). The club will provide all the training needed and no prior experience is required. So, if you are new to the parish or have been previously involved, we would love to hear from you and we encourage you to come along and get involved. Skills Challenges. Our underseven, under-nine, under-11 and under-13 teams continue with their skills challenges weekly, we’ve got some great videos snippets on our Facebook and Twitter accounts of some of the kids in action.

GURTEEN

NATIONAL FLEADHFEST: On a National level Sligo has been chosen to host the National Fleadhfest this year. This replaces the annual Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann and it will be a virtual online event and is scheduled to take place between August 1 to August 9 – full details later.

SLIGO COUNTY BOARD CCE: Due to the Covid-19 epidemic and the ongoing restrictio­ns the annual County Fleadh won’t be able to go ahead this year but Sligo Co. Board are currently organising a virtual Fleadhfest programme for June. Full details of which will be announced at a later date. As part of the programme a competitio­n is being organised to compose one song and one tune. Closing date for entries is Friday, April 16, 2021. It is open to all Sligo people of any age at home or abroad. The song with Sligo theme of traditiona­l nature and the tune of Irish traditiona­l dance tune. Please send your entry using voice recording via Whatsapp to 086 3916761 and include your name, age, address and contact number. Parents/Guardian name and number if under-18 – email address also title of tune and/ or song. It can be performed by

EASTERN HARPS: Eastern Harps 50/50 draw held every Monday night – €564 was the prize on Monday night, February 8. Winner was Ryan Duffy. Tickets are €2 each or three for €5 available at Centra or online on Facebook and Twitter. All support is greatly appreciate­d.

CLOONACOOL

PARK LOTTO: The community park lotto draw for February took place at the weekend for a jackpot of €5,100. The numbers drawn were 1, 6, 20 and 23. There was no jackpot winner but there was two matchthree winners; Will Armstrong and Brid and Tom Calvey. The winner of the SuperValu shopping voucher was Aiden Kilcoyne. The committee issued renewed thanks to Surlis’ Supervale for their generous support and thanked everyone for their continued support.

LAMBING SEASON: Preparatio­ns are currently in full swing throughout the parish in anticipati­on of the lambing season due to commence in the coming weeks. These are the weeks of relocating sheep, dirtying up yards and providing extra feeding. It is always a great sign of spring the bounty that each new farming year provides. Sheep are particular­ly vulnerable at this time and are easily worried by dogs. If you are a dog owner, pay particular attention at this time. Any dog, no matter how tame, can seem like a wolf to a pregnant ewe.

MENTAL HEALTH: The current lockdown has the potential to negatively affect mental health. Do not feel alone and do not suffer in silence; help is always available. COOKERY ONLINE: Eileen Kirrane realises that there are a lot of children and people with additional needs who are unable, due to Covid, to attend workshops or cookery classes. Eileen is currently using her prior experience in working with such clients to make some highly profession­al pre-recorded online courses which can be followed with assistance from family or carers in their own home. The lessons vary in length and difficulty with a short easy one at the beginning, to allow the participan­ts start the course gently. Each course can be purchased for €35 per person or both courses for €60 and a link to one lesson will be provided each week for six weeks. OLD PHOTOGRAPH­S: A Tubbercurr­y group are collecting old photograph­s of Tubbercurr­y and surroundin­g areas as part of a historical collection for posterity. CLOONACOOL 5K: In previous years, Cloonacool GAA Club brought notoriety and colour to the parish with the organisati­on each February of the 5K road race. This year, the event has been missed due to the Covid crisis. This has been a big loss to the club in terms of fundraisin­g and indeed a big loss to our parish in terms of its spectacle. Hopefully the race will be restored to its rightful place as soon as regulation­s will allow.

TOWN BUS SERVICE TO CARRAROE: Cadra is continuing to campaign to have this service restored to Carraroe. We are aware all that is required to allow this proposal is a 10-minute extension to the existing service routes. The

National Transport Authority recently met a delegation of Sligo County councillor­s to discuss bus services and are meeting again in a number of weeks with progress report. As you may be aware the current service comes and turns at Greenfort Estate. If it proceeded over Cairns Hill to Carraroe via Lakeview back to town via Carraroe Retail Park it would be around as fast and could provide a much better service to the area. All residents are requested to contact their local representa­tives before the next meeting requesting the service be returned to Carraroe.

SHAMROCK GAELS: The club is currently upgrading our website and it will be off-line for a while. Well done to all who are participat­ing in the Healthy Club committee’s walk/run challenge for the month of February. There are 156 people participat­ing and after week one the Gals and Pals are marginally ahead. YOU DID IT: Irish Life Health has teamed up with the GAA and RTÉ’s Operation Transforma­tion for the Every Step Counts Challenge.

A huge thank you and well done to everyone in the community that took part in the Irish Life step challenge. We have reached the target of 4000km in just 12 days. 72 people signed up to help the club qualify for the draw, a tremendous community/club effort.

The challenge stays active until March 3 so why not keep up the new habits you’ve creating.

THE ABILITY PROGRAMME: This is a free job coaching service for

18- to 29-year-olds with a physical disability. The services helps young adults improve their job-seeking and employabil­ity skills through developing an individual career progressio­n plan. OVER 50 FITNESS: Are you over 50 and would like to engage in some online fitness.

The Sligo Stronger for Longer 2021 programme is targeting men and women aged 50 years plus in County Sligo, who would like to engage in a supervised online fitness based physical activity programme. The programme will support and guide older people in Sligo to engage in a quality physical activity opportunit­y over an eight-week period, which can help enhance their overall health, fitness and well being.

The programme will run twice weekly for eight weeks ; Mondays and Wednesdays and Mondays and Fridays. The cost is €15 per person and anyone interested can sign up via our online Eventbrite link. ROSARY ON LINE: The rosary is currently being delivered online in St James’s Church, Charlestow­n, Monday to Friday at 8pm. The church is closed for the duration of the rosary with people invited to attend online via the webcam.

FLIGHTS MAY RESUME: Ireland

West Airport expects to be on a flight schedule released this Friday by Ryanair, that would see flights resume from the airport from

March 28.

The airport experience­d losses of close to €4 million last year due to the impact of the pandemic.
